Israel Memorial and Independence Day 5784

A time for reflection and gratitude

This year, more so than in recent memory, Yom Ha-zikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, and Yom Ha-azma’ut, Israel Independence Day, present us with an incredible challenge: the massacre on 7 October and the ongoing war have left us grieving and in shock. And yet, it is ever more poignant to express gratitude for the miracle of the founding of the State of Israel. We hope that one or more of the options that we are sharing with the congregation will provide you with a meaningful way to connect to Israel’s national holidays.

  • Rabbi Lea Mühlstein and Rabbi Nathan Godleman from The South London Liberal Synagogue will be leading a short reflective service on Monday 13 May at 7pm on zoom followed by an opportunity for informal conversation. To join, please register for a personalised zoom link.

Members are also invited to join Rabbi Lea in attending:

  • Voices from the Israel Reform Movement (IMPJ): marking Yom Ha-zikaron and Yom Ha‑atzma’ut together on 9 May at 6-7:15pm. The online event will feature voices from IMPJ communities, resources, music and stories related to the present and past. To join, please register for a personalised zoom link.
  • Masa’s Yom Ha-zikaron Memorial Ceremony honouring Israel’s Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism will reflect on our shared sense of loss and the resilience to rebuild while holding onto hope. The ceremony, conducted in English, amplifies the voices of Jewish members from global communities and new olim who bravely fell in defense of the state, both in Israel and abroad. The event will be live streamed on 12 May at 5pm. The link to view the event will be available soon.
